How electricity cost is calculated
Energy in kilowatt-hours (kWh) = power (W) ÷ 1000 × hours used. Cost = kWh × price per kWh.
daily_kWh = (W / 1000) × hours
monthly_kWh = daily_kWh × days
yearly_kWh = monthly_kWh × 12
cost = kWh × price_per_kWh

Frequently asked questions
Where do I find the price per kWh? Check your electricity bill — it usually lists the rate per kWh. The U.S. average is around $0.15–0.20/kWh; rates vary widely by region and season.
My appliance cycles on and off (like a fridge). What should I enter? Enter the average running wattage and adjust the hours per day to estimate actual on-time. For refrigerators, dividing the labeled watts by 3 is a common rough estimate.
Does this account for tiered or time-of-use pricing? No. It uses a single flat rate per kWh. For tiered or TOU plans, run the calculation separately for each tier or time window.
